hello barry,

i having same issue 1 of clients office 2016 pro plus on windows 10. far, i've tried:

- full repair of office

- full uninstall/reinstall of office

- tested disabling add-ins

- rebuilt search index.

- rebuilt outlook profile

- ran updates office , os.

the issue not seem related indexing @ all. search works fine. problem added boxes under instant search stuck described above. see screenshot below. basically, field stuck. "apb" cannot removed or deleted until outlook restarted. normally, hitting close search should remove text. @ first, able add random box , allow stuck, others perform normally. after while though, multiple boxes stuck. 

forgot add, have ran offcat scans. fixed "allowphrasematch not 1" search error. no change after editing registry fix error though. here current scan:
