Resource Allocation in MS Project - Microsoft Community

according ms project: (unit number or percentage)

maximum units - when want specify how time work resource has available work on tasks in project, specify maximum units in resource view. total used calculate how time work resource can spend on each task assignment (this percentage indicated in grid above) .

assignment units - when want specify how of work resource's time dedicated specific task, enter assignment units. specify assignment units material resources indicate quantity of material being used assignment. (this not referenced in of views can see). without duration increased duration.

i show resource in task in 2 ways:

1. percentage of time resource can devote task

2. percentage of time resource needed task.

this allows more accurate schedule. can see % of resource availability can used

for example:

document functional requirements level of effort 15 days

  • i have 4 resources assigned task
    • 2 resources 100% available
    • 1 resource 20% available
    • 1 resource 10% available (but needed 40% of task)

due way ms project works, , because of resource #4, duration of task 120 days (w/o leveraging 40% needed time)

ie – resource #4 – 15 days of effort @ 60 % of time needed 20 of task

40%  needed 15 days of effort  is 6 days or 36 hours (6 hours /1 work day) of effort

10% of availability 36 hours adds 7.2  days of duration.

so rather task taking 120 days in duration 15 hours of effort (based on see in ms project), think should take 67.2 days of duration.
