"Hard" and "Soft" Constraints in Microsoft Project - Microsoft Community

as part of moderately advanced ms project training i've been asked deliver, syllabus includes section on difference between "hard" , "soft" constraints in microsoft project.

i suspect syllabus has been compiled familiar primavera, not ms project; i'd never encountered the "hard" , "soft" constraints terminology before, although primavera appears use it.

the thing can see might relevant option in project options / schedule "tasks honour constraint dates" - i've left ticked can't see point in imposing constraints if autoscheduling / levelling mean ignoring them.

so, questions:

1. understand by "hard" , "soft" constraints in microsoft project?

2.  do  you ever untick the "tasks honour constraint dates" option? if why, , achieve?

thanks help!

good question.  in microsoft project, software offers 8 types of constraints.  4 of them considered "flexible" (aka "soft") , 4 of them considered "inflexible" (aka "hard").  these 4 terms informal, , used describe severity of limitations imposed on task when constraint applied.

the 2 default constraints, possible , late possible, flexible or "soft" constraints, , when used, software not display indicator in indicators column tasks these constraints applied.  start no earlier , finish no earlier flexible or "soft" constraints, , when used, software displays indicator in indicators column looks calendar blue dot in it.  other 4 constraints (finish no later than, start no later than, must start on, , must finish on) inflexible or "hard" constraints, , when used, microsoft project displays indicator in indicators column looks calendar red dot in it.  hope helps.
