Thumbnail issues with Office 365, and other - Microsoft Community


hello all.

i have windows 10 laptop pc. used had office 2013 installed, after organization purchased office 365 pro plus 2016 installed , uninstalled office 2013. that's when problems started; ones found:

1) thumbnails files created using word, excel, powerpoint etc have different type. have @ screenshot 1. word documents seem match icon of new word, excel documents have older icon, , powerpoint documents show actual first slice. supposed like? if no, how fix it? works anyway, annoying eye...

2) mouse right click > new word/excel documents missing. see 2nd screenshot. i've tried few suggestions found. nothing works.

the exact same problem happened 2 different laptop pc's windows 10, of different brand , a  4 year age difference , $1500 price difference... updated. on old laptop, tried uninstalling every office version , installing 365 again. didn't fix it. it's either windows 10 or office 365.

note: if key/value created, not need create new one. follow steps , see if there key/value missing needs added.

 

please try following steps below fix issue word:

  1. run regedit (windows key + r, type regedit , press enter), navigate to hkey_classes_root, ctrl + f -> find .docx key.
  2. left click .docx key, there should 3 string values on right: (default), content type, perceived type. double click (default) string value , change data "word.document.12"
  3. right click .docx key > new > key, name "word.document.12"
  4. right click new key word.document.12 > new > key > name shellnew
  5. right click shellnew key > new > string value. change name of new string value "nullfile" and press enter.
  6. go to desktop, press f5 (or right-click on desktop > refresh) and check whether "new microsoft word document" is in menu.

 

for excel, steps little bit different:

  1. run regedit (windows key + r, type regedit , press enter), navigate to hkey_classes_root, ctrl + f -> find .xlsx key.
  2. left click .xlsx key, there should 3 string values on right: (default), content type, perceived type. double click (default) string value , change data "excel.sheet.12"
  3. right click .xlsx key > new > key, name "excel.sheet.12"
  4. right click new key excel.sheet.12 > new > key > name shellnew
  5. right click shellnew key > new > string value. change name of new string value "filename" , data "c:\program files\microsoft office\root\vfs\windows\shellnew\excel12.xlsx"
  6. go to desktop, press f5 (or right-click on desktop > refresh) and check whether "microsoft excel worksheet" is in menu.

 

regarding concern office thumbnails, appreciate feedback , suggest post them on our powerpoint uservoice. best way make our products , services better , others.

know if there way insert attachment (e.g., document) within meeting invite not own. example, vp creates meeting invite managers quick touch base.  the managers attach document invitees may view 'summary' while being discussed).  is possible invitee include attachment? hello janice, you can send attachment meetings got invited in outlook 2016. can insert attachment going event go insert tab select attach file . click send update send meeting updates, including attachment. let know if need further assistance.
